Game sound not working in Ubuntu Linux

Postby pyrometal » Fri May 07, 2010 4:38 am

Like the title says, I was unable to get sound/music to work in Ubuntu...

I've tried with my old Gelman demo and no success

I've tried to swap my sdl library around (since GE use SDL) to use ALSA, OSS, PulseAudio, but the problem remains the same.

Does anyone know a solution that works?

The Linux system is good, but it is hard to support.
The sound is working on Kubuntu 9.10.

Well, this is wierd... After playing in my BIOS it started working! I restored factory settings and etc. Perhaps only the restart was required, who knows... Just glad it works now :)

To anyone whom may experience the same issue, I am using the OSS version of SDL.

But when I play the midi externally with timidity...it's okay...no error happened...
I use timidity as the midi sequencer for Rosegarden too...it's okay...

Yes I notice this too, I got sound working fine except for midi (which I can play via a any music player). I haven't gotten Rosegarden to work either yet though. Hopefully I will sometime soon.

I have to admit that sound in Linux is far more complicated than I had anticipated at first. It's the only problem I have yet to fix entirely.

BTW

Pyrometal, a quick note about Ubuntu Linux

You cant have sound in more than 1 application at once, so if you were watching Youtube or using any other application that used audio, you must first close it and then re-open game editor for it to have soudn :/ Idk why dude linux is retarded like that

Just curious how did people here get GE working in ubuntu? I tried compiling it myself and collected some errors, I tried the download on the GE page and set permissions only for it simply not to open and give me an error about some file not being the correct version. I have tried all the fixes that I have found here and further abroad and managed to trash my ubuntu box in the process. It is not a major problem at the moment as I can write games and export them on my win7 netbook but I would like to use GE at work and we only have ubuntu there.

Any help would be appreciated.

You do relize that linux OS is diffent in many ways
the mian reason is that in linux EVERYTHING is a file
so when you have more than one sound program runing it runs in between GE and some other
they fight out and the 1st one that was open 1st wins but new and better linux is over coming that pro.
if it happens that mean then taht you have a old linux OS
that happen when i had Linux mint 4
But now i have Xubuntu 10.04 i can have 25 progams open
and i get sound form all
only some is slower then some
try updating

Hope this help
